Celebrate Mothers Project

2016-03-31_0001.jpgLast week I spent an afternoon cleaning out an old chest full of photographs and memorabilia. Although I dreaded the task, once I started going through all the old memories; family photographs, my kids’ artwork, and other pieces of the past, I fell into a state of nostalgic euphoria. I found myself reliving the fond memories of the past, when my kids were small.

My kids are grown now and living outside the house. I couldn’t be prouder of who they have become. When they were small, I couldn’t imagine ever having them leave the nest. But as the years went on, I saw how much they had matured and grown into strong, young adults.  Luckily for me, I have tons of photos of them when they were growing up. In the 90’s we took photos with film. Once the pictures were developed, I immediately placed them in albums and kept separate ones for each child and for the family photos.

One thing I noticed was that I was missing in many of the family photos. I took a lot of photos of my kids when they were growing up, but I am hardly in any of them because I was always the one who took the photos. The photo to the left was taken with my son in 1994 when he was just 6 years old.I did not know how much I meant to my son, until one day he came home from school with the artwork shown. Never again, did I omit myself from my family photos.

I do not want this to happen to you, so I started a “Celebrate Mothers Project” at Lightscapes Portrait Studio in Duluth. It will be held on April 12, 14, and 16.

What is Celebrate Mothers?

It is a Photography Session where I create beautiful photographs of a busy mom and her children, so she can look back when her children have grown and not regret that she was always behind the camera. The imagery is mixed with her hand-written words answering, “what do you want to remember most about your children at the age they are right now?” And the words or drawings of her children answering, “what do you love most about your mom?

Heartwarming photos of you with your kids aren’t frivolous – they’re a necessity.

Because to them? You’re too indispensable to be omitted from their past.

Clothing Suggestions for Spring Portraits

Spring is just around the corner in Georgia. The flowers are starting to bloom and by early April the trees will be adorned with gorgeous spring green leaves. Spring is a beautiful time of the year in Georgia and that is why so many families asked to be photographed during this time. The most common question I am asked is “What should we wear for outdoor family portraits?” Here are some Clothing Suggestions for Spring Portraits. The days when everyone wore the same color top is out – now it is more about coordinating colors and creating a palette of tones. That is why I have created “Color Palettes” for each of the four seasons. The photograph shown, displays a very soothing combination of blues and salmon for the Spring. If you are not sure about what colors will work for you, I offer a FREE consultation for family portraits. Please call me at (770) 623-1040 so we can chat about your family portrait. The middle of April gets a little crazy, so call soon so we can book an appointment for your outdoor family portrait. Lightscapes Portrait Studio is located in Duluth GA. I can travel up to 10 miles to a nearby park or your home for spring portraits.

Family Portraits Matter

I receive many rewards in my career as a family photographer. One of them is watching a family view their family portrait that I created, for the first time. The portraits that I create at Lightscapes Portrait Studio in Duluth, GA are designed to last a lifetime and to be handed down to future generations. It is painsaking for me to see how many family portraits are floating around in cyberspace, on cell phones, CDs or thumb drives.

Family portraits that are displayed at a home, can help build a child’s self esteem. Here is what two psychologists have to say about family portraiture:
David Krauss, a licensed psychologist from Cleveland, Ohio says, “I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit. A photographer’s job is to create and make the image look like a safe holding space for kids where they are safe and protected. Kids get it on a really simple level.” Krauss is one of the earliest pioneers in using people’s personal photography and family albums to assist in mental health counseling and therapy. He co-authored “Photo Therapy and Mental Health” in 1983 that is considered a founding text for the use of photography in therapy.

“It lets children learn who they are and where they fit,” says Judy Weiser. a psychologist, art therapist and author based in Vancouver. “They learn their genealogy and the the uniqueness of their own family and its story. When a child sees a family portrait with them included in the photograph they say to themselves: ‘These people have me as part of what they are, that’s why I belong here. This is where I come from.’” Weiser has spent more than 20 years using all manner of personal photography to assist in the treatment process of her clients. She is considered by many to be the foremost authority on these treatment techniques, called PhotoTherapy.

My portrait studio specializes in family portraits of all sizes. I don’t care what size my client purchases, I just want to make sure they display them at home for the sake of their family. It is important to me to create a tangible piece of art that has so much value.

What to Wear for a Family Portrait

studio family portraitFamily Photography is back and thriving after the long recession of 2008-2012. I just attended the International Photography Convention, known as Imaging USA, in Atlanta GA.  There were over 10,000 photographers in attendance and we all shared stories on how important our role is in preserving family memories through archival photographs.

Although most family portraits are done in the summer and the fall, the winter is also a great time to consider a family portrait. The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is over and the schedules are more relaxed. The most common question I receive is “What do we Wear for a Family Portrait?” I usually ask a client to come to the studio to select a backdrop and then coordinate their clothing to match the backdrop and their home decor. One of my favorite color combinations is the charcoal palette. The colors are muted and subdued which truly brings more attention to the faces, which is what the portrait is all about.

Lightscapes Portrait Studio specializes in family photography year round. We offer a complimentary consultation prior to the session so I can create the portrait of your dreams. For more information on family photography call (770) 623-1040 or visit the website.

Custom Family Portraits

What makes each family portrait special is that I custom design specifically for the client. Each portrait is a unique piece of artwork that no one else will have. I have experienced many outdoor family sessions, but one from last fall I will hold dear to my heart as one of the most unique family portrait outdoor sessions I have ever photographed. I had a family request to photograph them with their musical instruments. Each parent played the guitar and their son played the violin. I photographed them on a beautiful fall day late on a Saturday afternoon when the light was just right. The photographs in the field of tall grass were particularly stunning as the grass changed to a golden hue as the sun was setting. This type of family photography is very fulfilling to me as an artist by telling a story through my photography. The family I photographed will have fond memories for a long time. Santa Photos in Gwinnett

Santa reading to childrenIt has been a few years since I tried Santa sessions at my portrait studio in Duluth. I wanted to try it again, but I did not want to replicate what they do at the Malls. I wanted to create an experience for the kids and their parents with interactive activities with Santa. With that in mind, I knew I had to find the best Santa ever and I DID!  And now I am offering Santa photos  in Gwinnett at Lightscapes Portrait Studio in Duluth.

What makes Santa Photos in Gwinnett different is that each child spends 25 minutes with Santa in a variety of activities.  First there is lap time with Santa telling Santa what they want for Christmas. Santa reads his favorite books to the kids, and they get a chance to ride is a sleigh.  We switch to a new scene and the kids have milk and cookies with Santa, and then play in his workshop with playdough and pretend tools.

Our first sessions were on November 15 and it went so well we are offering Santa photos in Gwinnett again on November 29 from 1 – 5PM.  There is only room for 8 children so we ask that each family reserves a space with a sitting fee deposit of $35.  For more information on Santa photos in Gwinnett please check the website.

How to be an Extra in Georgia’s Film Industry

Bellwood Quarry, located just a few miles west of downtown Atlanta, is a 100-year-old granite quarry surrounded by acres of wooded land. It served as the survivor's camp in season one of "The Walking Dead," and acts as several locations in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1."

Best Weather for Fall Outdoor Portraits

outdoor fall portraitsClients love to be photographed in the outdoor fall colors and many ask ” What is the Best Weather for Fall Outdoor Portraits?”  The fall colors in Georgia usually start the 3rd week of October and can extend all the way through Thanksgiving weekend.  It is not unusual for me to photograph families outdoors on Thanksgiving weekend with just sweaters on. The Best Weather for Fall Outdoor Portraits though is when it is cloudy or overcast.  The colors of the leaves are more vivid in cloudy weather.  Also the overcast light is even light and the clouds act like a giant soft-box for lighting. I typically always use a little fill flash however, to bring out the eyes of the subjects.

Last weekend I photographed a family that I have been seeing every fall for years for their holiday portraits and holiday cards. The forecast was for 100% rain, however there was a 3 hour window in the morning where no rain was predicted. We hit the timing just right and had a fabulous outdoor portrait session.  I just love the background colors (which look like painting).  The family pose shows their love for each other and that was the icing on the cake.   For more information on Lightscapes Portrait Studio family portraits visit the website.
